Wired Magazine is one of my favorite magazines and I have been a subscriber for almost 10 years. They recently produced an interesting article about current investment in wind power and whether we are doing it in a smart way. Many of my fellow MBA classmates have an interest in working in the renewable energy sector after graduation and this is a good read.
The thrust of the article is that the U.S. is currently building wind farms in areas that do not need the power like predominantly rural areas. These areas also lack the transmission lines to carry the generated power over long distances. The article makes the point that we should better focus government incentives to affect the outcome we desire and that we need to either consider increasing high power transmission infrastructure in rural areas or begin locating wind farms nearer large population centers. Which of these solutions do you think is the best answer? Also be sure to check out the article to see what NextEra Energy Resources did when faced with this challenge.
