My undergrad education was mostly spent in psychology classes. That probably helped me be a better manager in my past career but does not currently assist me with analyzing mathematical data in business school. In business, data is the key to everything. We don't want to guess, we want to know. Counseling on the other hand was mostly about educated guessing and intuition about what someone was feeling or needing.
So, while some of my engineering or business educated classmates were studying numbers, I was coming up with mental disorders and their appropriate diagnosis and treatment methods. Sometimes I lost interest in the material and would just try to amuse myself. My class presentation about a trichotillimaniac with turrets syndrome who would involuntarily swear at you while pulling out their own hair was not particularly well received. I think I have always been better suited for business but didn't know it until some time after I graduated.
What initially lead me to choose counseling was encouragement from people who recognized that I had some natural intuition about people and situations. What I found out only after exploring counseling was that my desire to figure things out and pick the best path was more fulfilled by the business world. I still really like helping friends with difficult situations they are facing but in general, I'm not as interested in the problems of the population at large. I'll have to write more later about what it is that I really like about business.
